​Orthotics to fit fashion shoes

The orthotics that are grouped into the Docpods fashion range are unique design of orthotics with limited bulk to help fit into fashion shoes for both ladies and men. The orthotics that are included in this category are the Slimline orthotic, the foot pillow, the heel pillow, the heel cup, and the soft step. These orthotics offer a wide variety of support and comfort features.

The most popular orthotic in this range is the Docpods Slimline orthotic. This is an orthotic with a hook back shape which helps to remove most of the bulk of a regular orthotic so it would be able to fit in ladies’ fashion shoes or men’s slip on shoes. It also fits well into shoes with limited space and also shoes that have a lot of space that you don’t need one to bulk up any further. The Slimline orthotic helps to support the medial arch of the foot and also helps to cup the heel to keep the foot’s natural fatty pad underneath the heel. This helps to make the shoes more comfortable and be able to be worn longer without any foot aches and pains.

The foot pillow gel insole is a cushioned full length gel insole. It’s a soft flexible insole that helps to cushion the foot and only offers mild support. This is a great insole if you have a shoe that is slightly too big and you need to take up some of the bulk and add some cushioning.

The heel pillow is the same material as the foot pillow so it’s a gel insole, but however, it only rests long enough to support the heel. This is great if you’re suffering from pressure beneath the heel or if you have a stone bruised feeling underneath your heel.

The solemates heel cup is a very similar orthotic to the heel pillow gel insole in that it’s a gel material. However, the solemates heel cup has an adhesive backing so it’s able to be fastened or stuck into ladies’ fashion shoes with open heels. Because of the color of the gel, it is almost invisibly slim in any shoe.

The solemate soft step an orthotic pad that helps to cushion the high impact areas of the forefoot. It is a clear gel insole that has an adhesive backing so it can be fastened into ladies’ fashion shoes, and once the foot is on top of it, it is almost invisibly slim so you won’t be able to see it from the outside.

The Docpods fashion range is a wide and varied range. However, if you’re looking for orthotic support, the Slimline orthotic is our most popular and most supportive orthotic. Heel pain, heel spurs, and plantar fasciitis. What causes heel pain and why do orthotics help?

There are a number of complicated problems that can cause heel pain. The most common problem that causes heel pain in adults is plantar fasciitis. The plantar fascia is a large ligament that expands the length of the foot from the heel to the ball and helps to support the foot and helps to limit flattening of the medial or inside arch of the foot.

When the foot rolls in or over pronates, the plantar fascia is strained as the arch collapses. It’s usually where the plantar fascia inserts into the heel becomes aggravated by repetitive strain of the arch collapsing and the plantar fascia pulling on this location. Generally, a plantar fascia irritation will be the most painful rising from bed and will get slightly better during the day as the foot warms up.

Treatments that are aimed at correcting over pronation or limiting abnormal motions in the foot such as orthotic insoles, stretching and strengthening exercises of the calf muscle, and wearing appropriate fitted shoes will help to limit the pain from plantar fasciitis.

There are other problems in and around the heel that can also cause pain similar to plantar fasciitis. These are also aggravated by over pronation so an orthotic insole will help to limit and prevent some of these other heel pains such as plantar bursitis, medial calcaneal nerve entrapment, and a bruised heel will also be helped by a supportive and cushioned insole such as the Docpods Ultra Soft orthotic in feet where there’s abnormal motion such as over pronation.

It’s very important that when fitting your orthotics they need to be warn in a well fitted and quality made shoe that cushions and supports the foot also as this will work in conjunction with the orthotics to help to support the foot.

Corns and callus and how orthotic insoles can help to prevent or limit corns and callus.

Callusing, or a thickening of the skin, is the body’s natural reaction to pressure. It is kind of a way that the body helps to protect itself from increased pressure or damage on the skin by thickening and toughening an area of the skin where there’s excess pressure. This can be very helpful, for example, when walking or working with your hands, day after day if we continue to work with our hands and irritate the skin, it would split and bleed and wear through. However, callusing helps to toughen this up so more and more work is able to be done on the same area of skin daily without any chance of infection or irritation.

The most common locations for corns and callous are shown in the above image. 

The problem with callusing is that unfortunately when the callus thickens the skin due to pressure, the increase in thickness of the skin or increase in hardness of the skin itself causes more pressure. This initiates what we call a positive feedback loop in that the hard skin causes more pressure and the more pressure causes more hard skin so then more hard skin causes more pressure and then more pressure causes more hard skin. Now this process keeps going around and around until the skin becomes so hard and so tough in an actual location that a corn or a very, very localized area of hard skin starts to form.

Now a corn is a very dense hard piece of skin, often the size of a grain of rice that feels like a stone in your shoe. So the corn itself is so hard that it begins to cause even more pressure and then the rate of growth of the hard skin, or the callus and the corn, are accelerated. This is often the case people often report when they have a painful corn or a painful callus that it seems to come up overnight and it grows so quickly. However, often the pressure has been on that area for months if not years, and then all of a sudden, the positive feedback of the increased pressure and the hardening of the skin has finally sped up to a rate where it appears like the corn or the callus has grown overnight.

Treatment for corns and callus, removal of the corn and callus via scalpel, this is usually best done with your local podiatrist, and then attempting to prevent or limit the regrowth of the corn. So if we go back to the cause of the corn and the callus, it’s pressure on the skin. Now one thing that can cause pressure, particularly on the sole of the foot, is abnormal mechanics that cause the foot to roll all the way to the inside or all the way to the outside, as when the foot rolls in, more pressure goes on the inside of the foot. So if there’s more pressure on the inside of the foot then we’re more likely to get corns and callus on the inside of the big toe, inside of the ball of foot, and inside or backs of the heels.

So to help to prevent this what we often do is use an orthotic insole such as the Docpods Ultra Soft or the Docpods Sports to help to prevent the foot from rolling in so the entire plantar surface, or bottom surface of the foot, takes its fair share of the load of the body and helps to limit the amount of point pressure under any of the bony prominences on the bottom surface of the foot. This helps to limit callus growth and also limit corn growth.

Bunions and bunion pain.

A bunion refers to the bony lump that usually protrudes from the medial or inside of the joint just behind the first toe. There’s also a condition called a bunionette or a tailor’s bunion which sits in a similar position but on the joint just behind the 5th toe, so on the outside of the foot. Bunions, or as it is also known as hallux abducto valgus, come about from a mechanical problem in the foot, usually over pronation that causes the foot to roll in too far which causes cross threading and excessive strain on the joint just behind the large toe.


If we think of the first toe joint like a plain hinge, this toe can only move straight up and straight down. So what happens when the foot rolls in, the joint just behind the big toe gets twisted to the inside so the big toe can no longer go straight up and straight down and causes excessive strain on the inside of the large toe or the joint just behind the large toe. What this does is it aggravates the bone and twists the ligaments in the large toe so that it deviates to the outside or across the foot. This can be a major problem as this deviation and mal alignment and overloading of the large toe causes an increased wear and tear on the joint which means that will wear out sooner.

By correcting any abnormal mechanics with an orthotic insole, we can extend the life of the joint just behind the first toe by deloading or taking some of the strain off of this joint. Orthotics that help to control over pronation will help to limit bunion pain and bunion growth. However, once a bunion has started to form, an orthotic insole will not reverse or undo the changes of the joint wear and tear.

Ball of foot pain and what causes ball of foot pain

Ball of foot pain is a complex and multifaceted foot pain that is suffered widely by people today. There are a number of causes for ball of foot pain, some of which are a Morton’s neuroma, a plantar plate rupture, crossover toe, and stress fractures and stress reactions on the bone, which are all aggravated by mechanical problems in the foot. Mechanical problems that help to cause or help to aggravate a preexisting condition are generally a foot that over pronates and causes an increase in strain on the ball of the foot. The over pronation either pinches on a nerve, in the case of a Morton’s neuroma, or aggravates the plantar plate of the second or third toe. In a plantar plate rupture, or also aggravates the plantar plate in crossover toe which causes a dull, throbbing, aching in the plantar forefoot.

Orthotic insoles can help to prevent and also help to treat ball of foot pain from the causes we have just discussed. However, prevention of the ball of foot pain is much better than trying to cure or fix the ball of foot pain once the pain has already arisen. The problem with ball of foot pain is that if it is ignored it is very difficult to get rid of. Some of the structures that are broken like the plantar metatarsal ligament in plantar plate rupture or the nerve irritation can actually cause nerve irritation in the Morton’s neuroma, can actually cause scarring on the nerve or the plantar plate which is very difficult to reverse. Once the nerve or the plantar plate is scarred or torn then surgery may be the only option for ball of foot pain treatment.

Orthotics help to support and stop the foot from pronating which relieves the stress and the strain on the forefoot and helps to remove the strain from the plantar plate, the metatarsals, and also the nerve that is related, that is aggravated during to cause a Morton’s neuroma.

Orthotics that would suit ball of foot pain treatment can be found in the Docpods range and it is best to get the most supportive orthotic like the Ultra Soft that you can fit in your shoes. With this said, the Ultra Soft does not fit into every shoe and it fits best into sport shoes and lace up shoes in men’s fashion shoes, ladies’ boots, and shoes with enough room to accommodate it.

As we move down the range, the Slimline orthotic, while it’s not as supportive, will fit in more shoes than the Ultra Soft orthotic so this can be a more appropriate orthotic based on the footwear that is being worn.
